In July 2022, the team of UPAY volunteers started studying various conditions of underprivileged children and the educational scenario in Kolkata. The majority of the parents of the prospective beneficiaries were found to be either domestic workers, small-business owners in the market, or daily wage workers. Young children are often driven to work in the markets and earn money, preventing them from going to school. After several rounds of surveys, we counselled parents and encouraged them to enrol the children at UPAY centres to pursue quality education within the slum establishment and give them wings to fly. Eventually, we were able to set the base and hence the establishment of the first centre in Kolkata and East India took place.
